Personal Statement
My name is James Connard and, I play lacrosse at North Forsyth High School, located in Gainesville Georgia. In my youth, I played baseball and football until High school. My Freshman year I diverted away from baseball and focused more on my football career. Around the beginning of my second semester my uncle, who played and coached lacrosse, introduced me to the sport of lacrosse and I immediately fell in love. When I went to school the next day, I approached our school’s lacrosse coach and told him that I was interested in playing lacrosse. At first this did not seem like a good idea since I would be competing with kids with 8-11 years of experience, and my ten years of baseball experience wouldn't be that much help to me.
In the beginning, I was scared that my future teammates wouldn't like me or that I wouldn't like the sport at all. I realized that I had to be coachable and had to work hard in the offseason to even have a chance to make the team in the first place. After the preseason of my first year, I was a JV captain and starter my freshman year and a varsity player by my sophomore year. At the banquet, at the end of my freshman year, I was rewarded with the Raider Award for my work ethic and selfless attitude.
Aside from all my athletic aspirations to get recruited, I understand that the work I put into my academics is just as important as the work I put into lacrosse. I wish to study exercise science/ sports medicine in college. I lean more towards the medical field due to influence of my parents since they both are registered nurses and work in the medical field.
The main obstacle I have had to overcome was my fear. Fear of learning a brand-new sport and playing with kids with way more experience. Some important traits that I believe I possess are the ability to be coachable, and the ability to get along with other people.
