How many 14 year old boys willingly leave home to attend military school? That’s exactly what I did in order to set myself up for success. My experience at Culver Military Academy is preparing me to excel as a student athlete at the college level. As a freshman new cadet, I endured six months of intense military training: marching, rifle drills, mud runs, room inspections, uniform inspections, and tests of military knowledge. Now, as a leader in my unit, I’m directly responsible for teaching and guiding others to live up to the high standards that Culver demands. I'm an outgoing, multi-sport athlete with a strong work ethic and leadership skills, and I believe I will be an asset playing for your college lacrosse team. With nationally ranked hockey and lacrosse programs, Culver is providing me a top notch education while pursuing the sports that I love.
Culver has also taught me some important life lessons. During my freshman year, I figured out pretty early on that my roommate Jacob was at Culver because his dad, a U.S. Army Special Forces Lt. Col, wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Jacob fought the system every step of the way. He didn’t do his school work or meet his military obligations. Because we were roommates, we were a team when it came to room inspections. Jacob didn't want to be at Culver. As a team player, I never complained. I tried to lead by example and help him as much as possible even though he didn't want to be helped.
The situation came to a head right after winter break when Jacob was caught using my debit card in the school bookstore. He told the cashier that I had let him borrow it. When asked by our unit counselor, I had to make a quick decision about what to do. While I wanted to protect Jacob because I felt sorry for him, I knew I had to tell the truth.
I had lots of mixed emotions about Jacob getting kicked out. I knew Culver wasn’t the right place for him, but I knew it was going to be really hard for him to disappoint his dad. I hope I don’t have to be put in a situation like that again, but I know I have the confidence to do the right thing. If I'm a member of your team, you can count on me to lead by example and to always do the right thing.
