Personal Statement
Greetings! There is much I would like to share about myself that I think distinguishes me from other students. As far as academics is concerned, I have always ben interested in Physics. My mother finished her PhD at Stanford and last year took me to SLAC where I was able to see the place quarks were discovered; then we went to the Griffith Observatory in LA where I found my inspiration to create a cloud chamber. It was this experience that helped me articulate my passion for science and teamwork that locked in my admission into the TC Williams STEM academy as a freshman. I continue to read and work on physics and cosmology ahead of my class because it is my passion. My mother and I have traveled to multiple countries for emersion and science experiences, our latest was a trip to Tokyo last month where I got to spend the day with the head of Mission Control at JAXA and later enjoyed a casual dinner with astrophysicists and rocket scientists. I am also a multi-sport athlete; as a 14 year old I was selected for the Alexandria Soccer Association as the only Goal Keeper for the Elite Red Travel team. They sponsored me traveling to Italy and Spain where I was able to meet the coaches for Real Madrid, Barcelona, and the Italian soccer teams. I fulfilled my role as goal keeper without missing more than 2 games in two years; my coach wrote an amazing letter of recommendation for me that I'll keep for life. However last summer I discovered I loved lacrosse! The speed of the sport and finally getting out of the goalie box is exactly what I needed. As a sophomore I have been selected to play with the Varsity Lacrosse team at TC Williams and will be showcasing my skills at an upcoming tournament. My passion for the sport has been noticed by coaches closer to where I live, and I have started to mentor younger at risk kids in my neighborhood on how sports and working together as a team can help them in all areas of their lives. Lastly, I am a sailor and live aboard a large catamaran with my mom. We are both certified by the Department of Natural Resources to pilot the ship, and I take great pride in learning the art of moving through the wind and the water. That has really engaged my passion to protect our waterways, climate, and planet. In college I hope to find a good fit for my passion in STEM as well as contribute to a great lacrosse team. Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to hearing from you soon! Greg Durkin
