There are two main things that have shaped who I am. The first is my mom and the second is getting cut from a team. These two things have taught me what a work ethic means, how to overcome obstacles, and what it takes to be a compassionate leader.
I have had two “dads” in my life who both left when I was young. My mother raised me and my sister mostly on her own and showed me that no matter what life throws at you there is always a way to make things better, learn the lessons from it, and stay strong. I now have an awesome step dad who is there for us and is a huge support to me.
I quit hockey but that decision created a brand new journey like my mom says “when a door closes a window opens’ and there was a reason for why I wasn’t on the team.
Fast forward to my sophomore year and I made the varsity team and earned defensive MVP. Determination, practice, and lessons learned from other sports showed me that I could develop and reach my goals. Lacrosse has become a passion for me. I realize now that the years of hockey, baseball, and football have led me to have a mind for the game, vision on the field, passion for the sport, and the determination that I can achieve a goal if I work hard enough for it.
On the field I strive to always be the hardest worker out there on every play, be a positive leader on the field and off, and learn from each practice and game.
Academically my goal is to always earn academic honors each semester and not take easy classes. So far I have been successful in achieving this goal. I challenged myself to take honors chemistry last year and two AP classes this year. It has taught me how to prioritize what’s important, manage my time, and focus on the end result. This lesson will serve me well as I want to go into the United States Air Force or the Navy after graduation from college to be a pilot.
I just recently found out that I will be in our National Honor Society and I was selected for our Leadership class. Over 100 students apply and only 30 are accepted. I also have been selected to be in LINK which is a mentor program for kids in my school that have disabilities. I will help them in the classroom and out. This will be great because these are the same cool kids I work with in Project Unified. In Project Unified I coach and play alongside kids in my school that participate in Special Olympics. I help with basketball and flag football. Our school is one of the very few who have been nationally recognized and featured on ESPN.
I feel I bring passion of the game to my team as well as leadership which has been learned over the years as a team captain and class vice president. I also bring an attitude of fun and lifting people up. My coaches have always said I’m coachable and look to bring the weakest player up and build their confidence. I take this as a huge compliment. I feel it’s important to be coachable because if I can’t learn from my mistakes and listen to those who know more, how will I improve?
My ideal college will have an aviation, business program or an ROTC program as well as a lacrosse team that will challenge me, encourage me, and help to bring out the best in me and what I have to offer.
