From the first day of attendance at a "Learn to Row Camp" in the 6th grade I discovered the joy of working as a team to achieve a shared goal. I have never experienced a sport that is fundamentally more reliant on the concept of "team" than rowing. With each stroke one must paddle keeping the shared “endstate” in mind. From practice to regattas, I can't imagine being closer to a group of athletes and friends who must rely on each other for every success and failure. Maintaining harmony among nine athletes requires practice, precision, camaraderie, friendship and leadership. I think about these factors and want to continually improve myself in order to become a better teammate and leader. It's this desire that causes me to work harder each and every day, with the hope of becoming faster, stronger and better. As in life, there are good and bad racing days, but the perseverance to perform under pressure, and the resiliency to bounce back after setbacks is what separates the great boats from the good boats. I'm proud to be part of a team that experienced a wide range of ups and downs, but still advanced to nationals the past two years. It’s with the same "in the boat" ethics I approach volunteerism, academics, music and family. I am not satisfied with "being OK" and strive to be the best I can be. I am proud of my 4.0 GPA, my half marathon run times, and first chair clarinet but realize that excellence in these events does not necessarily equal excellence in life. It is for this reason I hope to find a college experience that will prepare me for life and make me a better person overall. I would like to find a profession where I can positively impact the wellbeing of others. Though I don't know exactly where this path will lead me I am intrigued with the prospect of working for the government, potentially in law or as a diplomat. I still have a lot to learn, but am hopeful that my "in the boat" experiences will transfer over to the citizen I hope to become. My coaches are inspiring me each day to maintain my hard work ethic, and to lead from the "front" both morally and ethically. It is the teamwork and camaraderie that I love the most. I hope to find a college environment where I can continue to grow, continue to better myself academically and physically, and contribute to a rowing team. I am open to all opportunities that will make me a better rower, teammate, student and citizen.
