Personal Statement
Hello and thank you for visiting my profile. My name is Tyler Kelly, I am currently a Junior at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, CA. I play varsity soccer under head coach Ignacio Cid, also Area Director for Pateadores Soccer Club of NewportBeach/Costa Mesa. Newport Harbor is a CIF Southern Section, Division 2 Team, however, all of our in-season games are played against D1 teams.
My interest in soccer started at the age of four when I was on my first AYSO team, however, my passion for soccer was ignited in 7th grade and then fueled by my freshman year coach and now Coach "Nacho" Cid. During my freshman year, I was invited by the varsity head coach to play on a United Pacific Soccer League men's team. At age 15 and the youngest player on the team, it was a thrill and a challenge to play against college students. My skills really grew during my time with the UPSL program and since that time I have learned so much from Coach Cid about my role as the left defensive back and my understanding of different game strategies and my ability to play the game.
Dedicated to being the best I can be on and off the field. I maintain a strong fitness and academic ethic. Off-season my work-out consists of three hours of cardio and weight-lifting at the local gym at least 6 days a week. In season, our team has weightlifting training and practices, yet I still do additional weightlifting workouts at least 3 times a week. This dedication to my fitness has paid off on the field with my speed and body strength and I am better able to defend the goal and assist offensively. I am driven on and off the field. Currently, I am maintaining 3.57 overall GPA which includes two IB courses. My desire is to get that to at least a 3.8 or higher.
Unique, I am right-handed, but a left-footed defender. This makes me somewhat ambidextrous with my feet and the way I see the field of play. An additional strength is that I play aggressively, but with a level head. I have never been carded and try to set an example for other players in good sportsmanship. We have come together as a team and are currently in round 2 of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff.
My desire is to attend a school that meets my needs academically and provides the opportunity to play soccer. I am looking for schools with majors in physical fitness or physical therapy, but that also offer a second major or a minor in business.
