Hi, my name is Jamil Qiyami and I’d like to introduce myself. I’m 16-year old Junior at Freedom High School in Oakley California. I first began playing soccer at the age of twelve. I started on a Recreational team in Newark, California, and quickly made my way up the ranks. Over the last four years I’ve had the pleasure of playing soccer at different levels under different coaches, This experience has helped me understand that coaches are not just looking for skill and ability to play soccer, they also look at the player’s attitude and how coach-able he/she is. Although I started my career on a Recreational team, I currently play for Spurs FC, an NPL 1 team from El Cerrito, California. I believe the reason for my quick progression was my determination to become a better player, my coaches, and definitely hours of training outside of team practices. I also play Varsity for Freedom High School. In my first two years of high school I attended Berkeley High School, which is known for its competitiveness when it comes to soccer. I played on the freshman team, JV, and then got pulled up to varsity as a Sophomore. I was awarded the “Attacking Player Of The Year” on both the Freshman and JV teams. Although I was injured during NCS, my team won the 2019 NCS Championship in a 4-1 win over De La Salle
Through playing soccer, I’ve learned many things about myself, not just as a player but also as a person. I’ve had coaches tell me that perhaps the best thing about me is my ability to take any type of criticism and work on improving. My academic goals for high school are to are to graduate with an Honor roll and get a high score on the SAT. Perhaps my number one athletic goal is to win NCS with Freedom High school. As I mentioned earlier, I play for a club out in El Cerrito, and I live in Brentwood, so commute is a bit of a struggle as I do not drive. The commute is around two and a half hours; I take the bus from my house to the Bart station, then take Bart to El Cerrito. I get home around 10:30 after every practice, but I’m determined to play at a high level, so I believe it’s all worth it. Overall, I aspire to be a great student athlete and play the game I love at a higher level in college.
