My name is Johannes Sadie, but I go by Nico, since I have three first names - Johannes, Jacobus Nicolaas Sadie. I am a sophomore at Drake High School in San Anselmo, California. I play for their varsity soccer team and during the fall, I play for their varsity water polo team. A little bit about myself, I am 6’3” and 15 years old. Both my parents are from South Africa and as a result, I have citizenship for both South Africa and America. I speak Afrikaans and English fluently and also a little bit of Spanish. I have been playing soccer since I could remember and have played almost every other sport offered to me in my childhood. I usually play outside back but during my freshmen year when I played for the JV soccer team the coach played me forward and I was their top scorer with 9 goals. Later in the season I was pulled up to the varsity team for their final games in the NCS league where our varsity team got 4th place in Northern California. For my club teams I predominantly play outside back.
On the soccer field I control the game by communicating clearly to make sure the team moves and shifts as the game moves on. I have always been an aggressive player and one of the few players in my club team that challenges to head the ball. I am a natural leader and have the ability to get my team fired up when needed but I also have the ability to be a calming influence when some players’ tempers start to flare - making sure they control their feelings and don’t get stupid yellow cards.
I am very flexible and will play where the coach puts me or where the team needs me. I work hard during practices everyday to make myself better and hopefully others around me better. I also work hard off the field on my academics since that is very important to me to get the best education possible. I apply the same focus and effort to my studies as I do when I practice and play a game.
I have a strong interest in studying physiology. I love helping others even if it's in the smallest way. For the last two years, during the first week of summer, I go to Mexico on a mission trip where we build houses for the unfortunate. It is something I love to do and it’s a great way to give back and help others.
