I'm currently a senior at Santa Cruz High in CA applying as an undeclared freshman to universities and colleges across the nation. In addition to being an Honors and AP student, my student athlete background includes several accomplishments, including: second place at the Region IV Championship, first at the Adidas Clash at the Border Showcase Championship, and first at the Nike Crossfire Challenge Championship.
My passion for soccer ignited when I was seven years old. With the ball on my feet, I knew it was something I loved from the start.
As a high school player, I was excited to experience the increased competition. As a first-generation Native American student athlete, I believe I've always been the type of person to take challenges while remaining humble and performing to reach my personal best. A challenge is an opportunity to strengthen. For example, freshman year I was on and off the varsity starting lineup but did not want to settle with the limited amount of playing time. I couldn’t settle for less so, in addition to working hard at practices and games, I added my own personal sessions. I was then the freshman with 12 goals. For the next three seasons I was awarded a starting spot and continued to play my hardest for my team and added weight training. Looking back, I’m proud of the "growth mindset” instilled by my family, and I truly believe that what you put in is what you get out. The point is to have courage to face challenges.
As my transcripts show, I also challenged myself as a student to take honors and AP courses. After my Sophomore year, I moved again back to Santa Cruz, CA from Toppenish, WA and left my family and friends behind. After the move, my junior year was a difficult year for me both emotionally and academically, and my grades fell. However, I didn’t give up. I showed determination through my ability to secure a 3.7 grade-point average my senior year and am working toward raising my cumulative GPA. I requested support and turned my situation around to the point it is now – applying to schools, reaching out to coaches, and looking forward to the challenges and friendships ahead.
From my very first time with the ball on my feet to my very first showcase win, it's been an awesome journey, and I would love the opportunity to attend a school that can provide a solid education while I play. With two little brothers, I would love to show them that you can do anything if you have courage and determination. I would like to thank you for the consideration, and I look forward to learning more about your program.
Respectfully,
Jonathan
