Many student athletes have a defining moment throughout their athletic high school career, for some it may be winning a championship or being voted MVP, but for me it was simply winning my first Varsity game. The first game I won as a Varsity goalie was won in a shootout after two halves of Golden Goal overtime. I knew that my primarily Senior-orientated team did not expect the Freshmen goalie to save four penalty kicks, but I was determined to prove my worth to the team. After saving four out of five penalty kicks, I was hoisted above my teammates heads in a show of gratitude and joy. This was the moment when I knew that I wanted to pursue soccer at a higher level.
Since my first victory I have had to overcome many obstacles in order to become the player that I am today. The most significant challenge that I have faced has been battling for the Varsity spot against another goalie who was one year my elder. Through this challenge I have learned a lot about my self and about the sport. This challenge brought out a never before seen competitive side to my charismatic personality. Fighting for the starting spot has taught me the importance of persistence, an attribute that has stayed with me since I secured the starting position.
