Personal Statement
“Νούς υγιής εν σώματι υγιεί” is a prominent phrase in Ancient Greek which means “a healthy mind in a healthy body” and it accurately describes my academic ambitions in partnership with my athletic interests. I am a kid that always prefers to challenge himself, whether it is in a classroom taking an ambitious course, or in a soccer field against a tough opponent.
Having been exposed to multiple sports such as track and field, Waterski, and Kung-Fu, I achieved multiple medals in these competitions (ex. Gold in the Greek National Waterski Competition), but what I actually attained was the athletic mindset, the values, and the ability to behave in an environment in which everyone is equal. This provided a vent out of my daily life as “Alkis”, which developed my character to who I am today. My athletic ability, combined with my willingness to work hard to achieve a level of academic excellence, is one of the key aspects of myself that I consider being valuable in a society that needs multi-faceted personalities who strive to become better each day.
I started playing soccer when I was 5 years old and having a ball at my feet has become a habit. I even have a few balls in my house and I dribble to the kitchen, play passes with the wall, and this sport has become a large part of who I am. My leadership skills let me dictate the game since, out of my many experiences with this sport, I have been the captain of my school team and taken part in highly competitive camps such as the one in Ajax in Amsterdam. This is another reason that makes me a suitable candidate for any team.
My main subjects of interest are Economics and Social Networking Platforms (Social Media). I engage in many extracurricular activities such as MUN, UNESCO, the Economic Olympiad, the Computer Science Olympiad, and a newspaper for teens, among others. One of my most recent achievements in the year 2021 is my inclusion in the National Team of Greece in the Economic Olympiad 2021, in which I was the youngest student in the country to be in the top 6 of the competition. I have also extended my knowledge into other subjects while being a finalist in the Computer Science Olympiad using the language C++, and getting an A+ Grade in both subjects in the Stanford 8-week Summer Course on Econ01, and Dynamics of Social Media. As a student, I also accomplished one of the highest grades in my school with a GPA in 2019-2020 of 19 and 5/14 out of 20, and 19 and 8/10 in 2020-2021, with the inclusion in the President’s List.
Finally, as for my personality, I wish I could let my friends speak about me. However, I consider myself as a hard worker, that has a clear goal, and every day tries to go from “Alkis” to “Alkis+1”.
