Personal Statement
“ In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen.”(Rudy)
I have always felt like the underdog, often overlooked by coaches because of my size. I have had to prove my abilities and have earned every position on a team. At 4, I was blessed with a club coach who was truly dedicated to teaching us a love for the game, as well as how to become strong young men, both on and off the pitch. He gave me confidence in my abilities and talent as a player, instilling our team with strong moral character and sportsmanship. I played for this coach until I was 13, when he retired. I was recruited by another competitive club team coach shortly after, but that next year would be the toughest year for me. Playing under this new coach, I began to lose my love for the game, and started to question myself as a player. That year, I learned my true strength, ability to persevere, and resiliency. I easily could have given up and quit soccer, but I chose to take that season as an opportunity to grow as a person. I learned who I was as a young man and as an athlete; I carry that with me in all that I do.
Playing soccer has influenced my drive to stay fit and healthy, sparking my interest in seeking a degree in the field of Exercise Science/Kinesiology. I enjoy pushing my limits in my academics, as well as physically; this field of study will allow me to bring my passion for health and wellness to others in my community. I believe the mental focus, strong work ethic, and high standards the game of soccer has given me will support me in achieving my educational goals. My mom was the first in our family to earn a college degree, and I want to be the second. Going to college and receiving a quality education is my number one goal, however playing soccer at a collegiate level would make my dream complete.
