For me goalkeeping all started in the city cup in 6th grade. I was the secondary goalkeeper at the time, but in the second half our first keeper fainted so I went in. It was tied at 0-0 at the time, so I knew I could not concede, and I persevered through the second-half, both halves of overtime and into the penalties. I was scared at the time, but after saving two penalties and securing the win, I became the new starting keeper and gained a lot of confidence. This was when I knew that goalkeeping was meant for me and I need to step up for my team.
My name is Sahm Marshall, and I am a hardworking and dedicated goalkeeper from Brooklyn, New York. I am in the class of 2022.I have played two years as the starting goalkeeper on my school's varsity team, the first year leading them to the division finals, and the second year winning the entire city cup for the New York City Charter school league. In freshman year I was also the captain of our varsity track team. I currently play for the cub SC Gjoa as the starting goalkeeper on a u18 team that plays in a u18-u20 age division. In addition to competing in New York, my team has an annual trip to the Norway Cup, which is the largest youth tournament in the world with 128 teams per age division. I have also lead my team in Norway to getting second place in the cup. In total, I have lead my teams to 2 city cups, 1 state cup, a cup title for the charter school league, and a second place cup in Norway.
I am a natural leader for all teams I play for, I like to command the field and help my teammates as much as possible, conceding a goal or losing should not be sad, it is just the drive to be better and make progress for next time. Resilience is a key part of learning for me because I know there is no use on dwelling on the past, the best thing to do is to look forward and move on. I also use this to encourage my teammates in that just because you are losing sometimes, does not mean that you cannot win. I am looking to play as high as possible and I aspire to go far in this world.
