Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Colten Habecker. I reside in Douglassville, Pennsylvania. I am currently a junior at The Hill School, a college preparatory school in Pottstown, PA. I have found the Hill School very rewarding and challenging due to the rigorous academic curriculum and expectations. I strive to achieve greatness both in the classroom and on the field. While balancing a challenging academic workload, including two honors courses, I ended my sophomore year with a 3.93 GPA. I was awarded the All- League First Team Academic Award. I also exceled on the Hill School soccer field by earning a spot on the starting lineup in my primary position as a forward, leading the team in goals, receiving the All -League First Team Soccer, and All Area First Team Awards. As a freshman I attended Daniel Boone High School. I earned a starting position on the Varsity team. I exemplified my diversity as a player by playing a variety of positions including left forward, center midfield and outside midfield to enhance my team’s success. I believe my perseverance, diversity as a player, and commitment to my team and coach are some of my best attributes. Ultimately, I am searching for an outstanding university that will provide a top class education and continue to further develop my skills and strengths in their soccer program.

The club team that I currently play for is called Lehigh Valley United 95’. We are currently ranked number one in the nation according to GotSoccer, and are one of the top five teams in the country. Similar to my career at Boone, I have played a variety of positions for my club team. I began my time at Lehigh playing center mid, and then was utilized as a center defender when our center back was injured. Currently, I am playing up top to help the team. Challenging myself to change from my previous club to Lehigh was one of the best choices I have made in my life. As a team, we have won the state championship for six years running (I have been a part of three of them). Even better, we have won the regional championships twice now (2010 and 2012). We attended our second national championship tournament at the end of July in 2012. We got third place out of the six teams there. While we fell short of our goal this year, Lehigh is still proud of the accomplishments made in the 2011-2012 season.

In addition to high school and club soccer, I have participated in the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association ODP for three years now (2009, 2010, 2012). All three years have been really fun, but the 2012 season in particular was stellar because we won the ODP region 1 tournament. We will be attending ODP nationals in March 2013. The 2012 season was also incredible because it was the first time that I got invited back from regional camp to be in the regional team pool. I was invited to play in the interregional event this December in Birmingham, Alabama, for the first time. I am very excited to play in that type of environment.

I also have experience with the Philadelphia Union Pre-Academy and Academy. I first started this program as a member of the U-15 Union Juniors. Soon after, I was called up to train with the U16 academy team, and I was invited to play with them during my high school season. I could not play because I had already committed to play at high school, but I trained with them whenever I was available.  Recently, I have been spring training with the Philadelphia Union Academy on Wednesdays.  I work as hard as I can to achieve greatness both on the field during soccer games and off the field in the classroom. I would really like to bring this attitude from my prestigious high school to the right college for me.
