Personal Statement
I want to pursue a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering in graduate school after obtaining my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. The academic offerings at a college must align with my goals to be considered. My commitment to schoolwork spills over into my dedication to my team and sport. I realized young that I would need to work hard to obtain the grades I desired and the perseverance to continue to build skills if I wanted to evolve into an elite athlete. Time management was probably the biggest skill to master but also one of the most valuable.
I strive to be the most authentic person I can be and always want my values to be reflected positively in my words and actions. I found out early while working my way to my 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do that I am very competitive, and I hate to lose. By this, I mean my drive to win does not come from wanting to win but from not wanting to lose. As a goalkeeper, I cannot make my team win, but my position and the work I put in can keep my team from losing, and I like to provide that to my team. Mistakes happen, but as a keeper, those usually equal goals, so I want to be sure not to repeat any. I welcome and even seek criticism as a means to improve and level up.
Last Year I was the upper school student body president at my high school, and my campaign buttons read “KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD,” which I believe embodies my attitude towards life in general. Be yourself, own it; you don’t have to be part of the crowd; standing out is not a bad thing.
