Personal Statement
My name is Samuel Grove and I am a Junior at Blacksburg High School.
I was first introduced to the game at the age of four and quickly became mentally and emotionally invested in it. During my younger years, I was constantly pushed by my parents and my Serbian family who are big football supporters. Up until 2011 I played largely in recreational youth leagues. My involvement in more serious soccer activities such as camps in Belgrade, Serbia and my wish for something more competitive than my current level drove me to try out for my local travel club, New River United.
At NRU I was initially placed on their B team and immediately realized how far behind I was in terms of skill and development compared to the other boys. This motivated me to try to become the best player I could be. I was praised from a very early age for being a natural leader, a highly coachable player, and one who gave all their effort to every activity. Summer after fifth grade, my coach challenged me to 500 touches a day with my off foot. I came back that year and was named a starter and captain of that team for two years until I was moved up to the A team. There I worked my way into a starting role and after one season was named captain of that team. On my high school team, first year I came off the bench, second year was a starter and captain. I understand the necessity of a healthy and disciplined work ethic to become a better player. This work ethic, coachability, and leadership skill have enabled me to be a captain on every team I have played on.
On the field I prefer the CDM position but have been played in many other spots throughout my life and have been complimented on my versatility as a player. I am left footed and my advanced vision and mental understanding of the game has consistently provided an extra edge to my game which is why I enjoy playing in a playmaker role with a large view of the pitch. I am a set piece specialist with my left foot providing me an advantage, I have been designated to take corners, penalties, and freekicks for my travel and High School teams.
My hope going forward is to have the opportunity to play and compete at a high level for a school that can challenge me academically and provide me with future career options.
