Personal Statement
My name is Jelani Lawson and I am currently a senior at Mary D. Bradford Highschool. My love for soccer began in my fourth grade year in elementary school. When I found myself so excited whenever I stood on the field, I knew I had fallen in love with the game. Since then I have worked every season to improve so when the time came I could play at the next level. My second love athletically came in the form of track and field in middle school. My peers had always complimented me on how fast I was, but I didn’t truly realize my speed until my first year of track in 7th grade. The feeling of anxiousness I would get when my heat was called up to race was like no other. It was a touch of excitement and horrifying at the same time. I hope I can take both of my sports to the next level, and I believe I am good enough to do so.
Academically, I hope to major in biology with a minor in chemistry so I can pursue my goal of becoming a dentist. I also hope to minor in Spanish so I can help those that only speak Spanish. My interest in the sciences comes mostly from two sources. When I was in elementary and middle school, science was always the subject of the day I looked forward to. I often found myself with the desire to learn more about biology and chemistry. The different elements and how they related to each other, along with the various life forms and the distinct differences that separated them into separate species. My second interest in science comes from my mother. She was a biology major and spent many years in school to become a doctor. As a child, I was astounded to learn that both the study of life and the study of chemical reactions could come together to save the lives of not only humans but various animals as well. Since I've excelled in science and English, It is fitting to use my strengths to achieve this feat. I hope to attend a college where I can advance my knowledge of biology and chemistry while at the same time fulfilling my dream of playing soccer and running track at the next level.
