Personal Statement
I was kicking the ball around with a bunch of my friends when I was was 10 years old. A dad of 2 of the girls who played soccer was watching. He went to my house and told my mom that I was really good. My mom said “thank you”, she was being polite. She did not really know about soccer. When I got home, my mom told me about the dad stopping over and she asked me if I wanted to play soccer. I said yes. The dad had given her the name of 2 club teams. We picked one and I started playing.
My name is Kaden Norby. I am in the class of 2022. I attend Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, WI. For highschool, I played outside back and for club, I play a center back. My high school team won state this year and we are ranked second in the Nation, according to Coach. My club team is FC Wisconsin. I have played with ODP for the last 3 years and I have made the STATE team each year.
I transferred to Marquette University High School after my freshman year because I wasn’t being challenged in my classes. I was a starter on the varsity soccer team my freshman year at my old school and my mother asked me if I would still want to go to Marquette even if I did not make the team. I still wanted to go to Marquette. It was hard to get into Marquette. They do not really accept transfers. I had to write letters and I had interviews. They accepted me and I made the team. The classes are a lot harder than my old school.
It has been really hard to get field time in these last 11 months because of COVID. I have practiced by myself in the rain, at night in the dark, and in the snow. My old high school is close to where I live, however, they kept kicking me off of the field. If the janitor’s red truck wasn’t in the parking lot by the field, I knew I was probably going to be able to practice. Then they locked up the goals and put up yellow crime scene hazard tape on the front gates.
Ever since I started playing soccer, I knew that I wanted to just keep playing and getting better. COVID showed me what it would be like not to have soccer in my life. I want to attend a college that has strong business and science departments and a competitive soccer program. I am a soccer player. I am a really good soccer player and I want to be even better. I know that I am not supposed to be “just” a soccer player, but that is what I love.
I want to play on a team that expects players to play and practice at their very best. Everybody has an off day, but not often. I play at my very best when I am playing with or against players that are better than me. It makes me work really hard and I play better.
Thank you,
Kaden Norby
