I have been playing soccer since I was three years old, playing in the YMCA youth league. Soccer has been a passion of mine, and one of the driving forces in other aspects of my life. As I get older, my love for soccer continues to grow, and I am always pushing myself to become a better player every time I step onto the field.
My club soccer career began when I was seven years old when I joined one of the local clubs, Wausau United(now Wausau City FC). By the time I was ten, I wanted to take my game to the next level and tried out for our local state league team, MC United. I ended up making the team, along with several friends that I had played with the previous year. Due to our already close bonds and excellent coaching, we were able to win the league two seasons in a row and advance to the premier league in our state, where we ended up winning that league too.
During my freshman year, I decided not to play high school soccer. I felt that playing an extra season with MC United at the state premier league level would help me improve my skills more than playing at the high school level as a freshman. As a sophomore, I felt that I was ready to play at the varsity level since I had improved my skills a lot from the previous year. Despite how I felt, though, the coach decided to put me on JV1. In my eyes, this was not because I wasn’t a varsity level player, but because the coach felt that all the seniors should be on varsity(half of the 22 player varsity roster was seniors, even though most of them got little to no minutes). Although I was slightly disappointed with this decision, I still gave my best effort on the JV team. I ended up finishing the season as the leading goalscorer(as a defender) and one of the top players.
Once my junior year came, I was very confident that I would not only be on varsity but that I would be starting as well. I continued to work hard all summer to improve my fitness through a personal trainer, and my soccer IQ through my club soccer coach and elite ID and collegiate summer camps. I believe that it showed on the field my 2018 fall season. I started every game and played my hardest every time. Other coaches took notice, receiving the 2018 Wisconsin Valley All-Conference Boys Soccer Team - Honorable Mention award.
My soccer career would not be possible without the help of many people in my life, though. I owe a lot to my coaches, both club and school, my trainer, my teammates, and, most of all, my parents, who have supported me since I started playing.
My passion for soccer has been with me since I first kicked a size three soccer ball at the age of three. My desire to play at the collegiate level is unwavering. I feel that the duality of playing competitive soccer drives me to be just as competitive in my academic life as well.
Thank you for your consideration,
Will Clancy
