Personal Statement
Swimming has and will always be a big part of my life. I became captivated by the sport when I began swimming lessons early in my childhood. I joined a competitive swim team during the summer of 5th grade after realizing swimming gave me an internal joy and drive no other sport offered. One thing that I enjoy about swimming is that the effort that I put into training shows up in the times that I achieve during meets, which motivates me to work harder.
Swimming has given me skills that I use in and out of the pool including time management, perseverance and optimism. These skills have helped me academically with challenging classes, such as the Accelerated Mathematics workload. I have taken accelerated math classes since my freshman year completing Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus in two years instead of the typical three. Using the skills of time management and perseverance, I managed the workload and have been understanding the material while also excelling in my other classes. In addition to perseverance, optimism is a very important skill that helps me face challenges but also to be resilient after failure. When working with challenging math topics, it is important to know what I did wrong and work hard to fully understand and make the proper corrections, making sure to keep my spirits high all the way through to ensure improvement.
I am glad to be able to participate in a sport such as swimming where effort is so key to success, especially when surrounded by others that share the same passion and love to the sport. I am looking forward to have the opportunity to continue competitive swimming at the college level.
