Personal Statement

As an international student with a different outlook on swimming and land training, I would like to achieve high honors for swimming in the USA. This will not be easy as the standards are tougher in USA than in South Africa.  Even though I qualified and swam at regional and national competitions in South Africa, my goal at college/university level is to be selected for your touring team and represent the university as a 100, 200m backstroker as well as a 100  butterfly swimmer at the All-state swimming championships. This will prepare me to become an Elite Sports Recruiter and Sports Manager in the near future.

  • I competed in Greece at the Loutraki International Swimming Meet from 16 – 17th June as well as the second International Swimming Meet on 23rd of June 2018 and received medals in the following races: 1500m silver medal and 200 backstroke bronze medal. I am 15 years old and competed in the aged 16 category. I also took part in the training and performance camp which took place during the week in between swimming meets and won a trophy for the "Swimmer with the most evaluation points earned".

  • I competed in my first one day Inter-Provincial Club Swimming Championships this year. We traveled from Cape Town early the Friday Morning, swam in the championship in East London the Saturday morning to mid-day and returned to Cape Town immediately after the competition was complete. I competed in the 100m backstroke and won a Gold Medal and and competed in the 400m freestyle and won bronze.

Swimmer is ready to start practice on time and comes prepared with proper equipment. 2. The swimmer understands and takes responsibility for attendance, performance, habits in practice and how these relate to meet performance and the performance of the team as a whole. 3. Challenges themselves and others to perform to the best of his/her ability. 4. Understands and calculates times using pace clock and also understands intervals. 5. Maintains attendance requirements of at least 90% of practices. 6. Picks up after himself/herself both on deck and in changing room. 7. Understands how to pass and allow another swimmer to pass TRAINING PERFORMANCE Test sets to move to the ELITE Training Group (without fins) Satisfactorily has maintained training at or better: 24x100 meters free on 1:10 12x50 meters free kick on 0:50 8x200 meters I.M. on 2:45 12x50 meters fly on .55 non-stop 1,500 meter free flip turn on every wall and no breaths off walls 800 free on 11:00 4x400 meters I.M. on 6:30 Can set goals for their own training intervals in consultation with coach. SKILLS PERFORMANCE 1. Consistently practices proper turns and breathing patterns off turns. 2. Continues to strive for a proper racing start and breathing patterns off start. 3. Can demonstrate a proper relay take off. 4. Has mastered required stroke and skill drills of previous groups. COGNITIVE 1. Swimmer has general knowledge of energy system and how they are used in training. 2. Understands nutritional requirements of training and competition. 3. Understands the importance of distance per stroke and strives for goal DPS through race and practice. 4. Understands that raining seasons are designed for peak performance at the highest level of competition at the end of the season. Understands that improvement will not happen at every competition as a result. 5. Understands and utilizes effective goal setting principals. STRENGTH PERFORMANCE 1. Has strength and flexibility required for training at the Elite Level. Understands the importance of flexibility and stretches outside of training. 2. Swimmer understands the importance of shoulder strength and performs shoulder injury prevention exercises on own. 3. Can do push-ups, pull-ups, and abdominal work correctly.
