Personal Statement
Swimming for me initially started as a lesson, in order to float and be safe during everyday life here in Maine. I ventured into Nordic skiing, lacrosse and soccer, but with each passing practice I made the choice to become a swimmer for life. I do also participate in summer recreational track and field sports and really enjoy open water swim events in local lakes. Swimming has been a vital part to my education and discipline both on the deck and off. It is a year-round sport that has shaped my everyday schedule and nutritional lifestyle. Over the years it has increased from 2 days per week, to now 6 days and a Zoom meeting on day 7. This sport has continued to allow me to succeed even during a pandemic with supportive and amazing coaches and teammates that care and reinforced everyday that we would be back to normal and be ready for that day. Success in the pool has run parallel to my success in academics and socially by building strong goals, and personal relationships with like minded people.
Each day at practice I push for that little extra, listen to my coaches and repeat each step daily until it is muscle memory and then build again upon that lesson. Swimming has taught me the thrill of success does not come easy, but it is priceless when it is earned. I continue to build on my dominant backstroke, persevere through the butterfly, and push as fast as possible thru the freestyle. I enjoy the individual success’, but cherish the relay moments with my teammates.
I look forward to future growth on a college team where I can build on my technique and strength in the water, but also find a location that will challenge my academic goals out of the pool.
