Garrett Spencer '16 Recruiting Profile

I started swimming for my suburban swim team when I was 7.  That season I received the " most improved swimmer" award.  I was hooked.  Each year I got better, grew taller, and people suggested I join a club team - so I did when I was 13, but only part-time since I was playing other competitive sports.  My club coaches saw potential and became frustrated with me when I only swam part of the year and only committed to practicing 3x week. My times were advanced level but I wasn't sure about swimming exclusively.  Then I was recruited by the high school coach for varsity swim and dive, I didn't want to give up my place on the football team, so I did both. I was close enough to state cuts my freshman year that I vowed to swim as a sophomore and I did.  It wasn't until my junior year that I finally gave up all other sports and swam exclusively.  That year I qualified for state in 4 individual events, all relays, set 2 school records, was all-conference, and all-state.  I returned to club swimming for the long course season and went to sectionals.  I am now strongly committed to swimming.  I know I want to swim at the collegiate level.  I can and will get faster and can be a solid contribution to any team.
