Personal Statement
Hard work and dedication, these are two characteristics that define me in the pool as well as in the classroom. I am a firm believer having success in the water as well as in the classroom go hand in hand. I have been blessed to have people in my life who have helped me find success in many areas of my life. It is because of the guidance I have received in my life that I find it important to now be a leader for my sisters, my swim teams and others in my classes. I’m confident if you spoke to my coaches or teammates they would tell you my work ethic is as good if not better than anybody on my team.
I have been fortunate to have my fair share of success when it comes to swimming. I broke my high school’s 500 freestyle record as a freshman and then again as a sophomore. I also broke the Midwestern Swimming 13-14 boy’s record in the 500 freestyle. I qualified for sectionals when I was 14 and then qualified for futures the following summer when I was 15. I was also the 200 freestyle relay team this past season breaking the high school team record.
However, I don’t believe success can just be defined by what meet you’ve qualified for or what place you may have finished. You have to look at where you are at in your training throughout each season and determine if you are equal to or better than. I was fortunate enough to have a coach teach me this at the age of 12. I know that each season if my times at practice or meets is not at least equal to or better than, I need to revisit my training.
Swimming is a big part of my life and I hope and plan to continue that at the college level. I love being part of my high school team and look forward to being part of a great college team. When deciding which college to attend, I know making sure the culture of the team as well as the academics the school can provide are equally important. I am very excited to begin this process!
