Personal Statement
I have two main passions: drumming and swimming. I’ve been drumming since age 7 when my teacher suggested it to my parents as a good way for me to use my extra energy. A few years later, I discovered a second outlet, and that was competitive swimming. Though I tried other sports, swimming was the one that felt best right from the beginning. I started with our local club, the Lake Champlain Waves, and also joined my school’s team when I started 7th grade. I've specialized in 50 free, 100 fly and 200 IM, but have posted strong times in most other events. There hasn't been a major focus on dryland/weight training with either team, and my maximum number of pool workouts a week has been 5 2-hour sessions during Varsity season, and 4 2-hour sessions for club. This has given me enough flexibility to be involved in other activities, especially music, while keeping on top of my schoolwork. But I don’t believe I’ve reached my potential as a swimmer. I’m excited to dig deep with a college team where the focus on training is second only to academics. My coaches describe me as respectful, fun, considerate and very coachable.
In the coming year the opportunities to improve, or to swim at all, are uncertain. But I'll take every chance I get to be back in the pool to train, compete if possible, and continue to drop time. Thank you for taking the time to view my profile. Stay safe and healthy. -Ben
