Personal Statement

My name is Antonio Lee Walters and I am a current junior at Burlington Christian Academy located in Burlington, NC.  I am the son of Gary Walters and Nydia Reyes Walters.  My mom is Puerto Rican and I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

First, let me tell you about my academics. I currently have an approximate GPA of 3.95.  Most of my classes are Honors and AP classes. I enjoy school and work hard to maintain a high level of academics. I am blessed to attend Burlington Christian Academy which has a high academic requirement for its teachers. All teachers have Masters degrees and most have their Doctorate degrees in their field of teaching. BCA is very highly rated when compared to school across the entire United States. It is a diverse school and has a very active international student program. My mom also teaches at this Academy and teaches courses in Spanish I and Spanish II.  I am blessed to attend this school from an academic prospective as well as their teaching on how people are to be respected.

Since I was a small child I have been involved in sports. The two sports that I have enjoyed as I have grown up are basketball and swimming. At my school unfortunately basketball and swimming are played during the same season therefore I have had to choose one of the sports. I went on to chose basketball due to my involvement in year around basketball. I have always done well and potentially had some opportunities for scholarship for my play. Unfortunately, during the summer of 2017 I injured my knee with a torn ACL.  As you know the ACL mostly controls lateral movements which is critical in the sport of basketball.  When I could not play basketball during the fall and winter of 2017/2018. Since I have always loved swimming and this sport does not rely as heavily on lateral movement, I joined the swimming team at BCA.  During the swim season I have qualified for the state meet to be held in late February 2018 in the following events: 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle,100 butterfly, and the 100 freestyle.  I have also set a new school record in the 100 butterfly and am working hard to break a few more school records. Swimming has always been one of the loves of my life.

Work ethic is very important to the team, coaches and to me. I have a very strong work ethic in all sports that I participate in.  When I was playing basketball as my primary sport I always attended practices and was the first on the court and the last to leave.  When I switched to swimming as my first sport I continued that work ethic.  In addition to the practices, I have one class at BCA in weight lifting and weight training to build strength in my body.

Let me thank you for taking the time to review my profile.  I feel like I have improved my best event times considerably in the short time that I have been swimming.  I will continue to post my best event times as I continue to improve.  I would ask that you consider me for a position on your team.  I feel that I could bring with me a great team spirit, hard work, and constant improvement in my swimming skills.  Academics will continue to be of critical importance as I move from High School to college.  Thank you again for taking the time to review my profile.
