Sergio Barrera '19 Recruiting Profile

As a kid, I was told that by working hard and dedicated myself to one specific task, I would accomplish any obstacle I come across. However, I understand that as an athlete you learn how to lose, you often get over-whelmed by depression, drugs, even personal problems. I personally,was often offered bad things and bad choices but as a good person would say, I said,"NO" to all the bad and challenged myself to become a smart, strong, and talented person. I also believe that their's other swimmers out there that are a lot faster, stronger, and smarter than me. Overtime, I understood that a champion doesn't always has to have those expectations. In fact a true champion that trains harder than the rest no matter how sour he/she is or how down they feel of working so desperately and not getting any results at all and still have the power within to strive for more, or the fact that life itself can bring a person down with a single thought and finds him/her self moving forward no matter how many times he/she falls. I strongly believe that a champion from true heart will work harder than others instead of taking an easy path. I have that feeling within me to accomplish a lot more because I want to become a better person and a great example to my kids when I grow up.
