Personal Statement
Swimming has been my passion ever since I enrolled in my first swim lesson as a child. I’ve always been enamored of my Dad’s college experience, having received a full ride scholarship to play tennis at the D-1 level. His stories of what it takes to be a college athlete has driven me both mentally and physically to pursue swimming at the collegiate level. I know that many people say that they want to go to college and play a sport, however, I know that it is only a select few that actually get that opportunity. I want to be one of the select few and I believe that my drive and effort both in and out of the pool will help me reach my goal. While swimming is considered to be an individual sport, being a part of my highschool team has helped me realize the importance of being a supportive teammate and how each person has a role to play in being a part of a team. Although I am only a Sophomore I am quickly learning that being part of a team means that each individual has a role to play to better the team as a whole.
I am confident that I would be a great collegiate swimmer because of my willingness to persevere and continue to be the best version of me that I can. I am self motivated, highly personable, extremely coachable and am able to adapt to many situations without being flustered. Although I am competitive as an individual, I enjoy seeing my teammates succeed as well. I am a natural leader and work hard to make sure the people around me are also the best versions of themselves too.
What differentiates me from other collegiate swim candidates is my drive and academic pursuit for excellence. I work just as hard in the pool as I do in the classroom. Academically I am a high performing student and take pride in my school work. I am a 4.0 student and have won several academic awards, such as the High Honor Roll and the Presidential Academic Award. I am also a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. For Utah swimming, I am currently number 2 in the state for my age group and received the High Point Award at the 2019 Utah Long Course State Championships. Last year, as a Freshman for the Olympus High School swim team, I scored the second most points for my team at the 5A High School State Championship meet and was a member of the record breaking 4x100 free relay team. My goal is to attend a top University that challenges me both athletically and academically; pushing me to new heights in the pool as well as the classroom.
