Personal Statement

Coming into high school, I was unfamiliar with the level of competition I was facing and how I was compared to the other swimmers. Previously, I had only taken lessons and have been doing a summer swim team, which I was one of the best off. As soon as my freshman year came along and I joined the swim team the whole meaning of competition changed and I was driven to significantly improve. After seeing many people faster than me and after my freshman year I got a coach who would work on technique with me. Next year I significantly improved and that feeling of wanting to be the fastest and improve has stayed with me ever since. I was able to focus my efforts on swim and become one of the faster swimmers on my team next year in the 50 free, sophomore year. Now, after my junior year, my speed in multiple events has increased and I will be the captain of my high school team. The most influential part of my high school career still remains my freshman year when some of my closest friends went to state and I barely made the districts meet.

I was fortunate to have great teammates who motivated me and a great coach who knew my potential. I learned that I love the competition, am self-motivated and motivated by others, always strive to be the best I can be, and that I may need to make some sacrifices. I was involved in more athletic and extracurricular activities prior to high school, but I knew I needed to make a choice, I focused on swim and education as well as keeping dancing as a hobby. I am looking for a program that will push me to improve my athletic capability in swimming but also a school that will value education and allow me to proceed with my future dreams.
