Personal Statement
Dear Coaches,
My name is Joseph Teh and I am from San Jose, California. I am from the class of 2020. As of 2019, I am 17 years old and a Junior in high school. I started playing tennis when I was about 10 years old. My all-court game allows me to compete well in both doubles and singles. My highest NorCal 18s Boys rankings so far have been #13 in singles and #1 in doubles. I am a very competitive person and I strive to perform to the best of my abilities. Something that may set me apart from many other recruits is my experience playing on a team. Since tennis is a relatively independent sport, I know that many kids may not get the opportunity to compete with a team. Every summer since 2014, I have played for Bay Club Courtside in the Junior Team Tennis Championships. Of the past five years, my team and I have won the Gar Glenny Cup between Nothern California and Southern California three times. I know what it is like to be a part of a tennis team–to cheer others on, to be cheered on, to play doubles with different people, to stick together during rough times, to have people that I can depend on, to win matches and still lose, to lose matches and still win, and to share the glory. Mostly, what I learned from this is that I work well with people so I believe that I have a promising future being on a team. I have a positive attitude, a friendly disposition, but also a strong desire to reach my full potential.
Throughout my life, I have balanced my tennis with my academics. I take both very seriously. I challenge myself academically by taking numerous advanced courses while also doing well in them. I have an unweighted GPA of 3.89 and a weighted GPA of 4.18. I have taken my SAT and ACT already but I plan to take them again at a later time. I would like to attend a school where I can experience a superb education while also being a part of the tennis program.
Thank you for your consideration
