Personal Statement

Hello! My name is Michael Bautista. My friends and family call me Jamie, by my middle name (James). My goals include playing college tennis as a starter and earning a degree in engineering. I enjoy learning, especially math and science. I love competing in everything I do, whether it's on the tennis court, games with friends or on another sports team.

My work ethic is always 100 percent and everyday I strive to get better in the classroom and the tennis court. I make a good teammate because I'm encouraging to other players and I can take constructive criticism as well as follow directions given to me. Even though the competition is not present, I chose to continue playing for my high school to give back to OHS and to help mentor and teach others on our team. My parents raised me from a military and Christian standpoint, with high moral values, and I hope to make good decisions in life. Respect is important to me-- not just as an athlete-- but also as a human being both for superiors or those below me. I like challenging myself in the classroom, community and sports.  I am determined to give everything I have and not cheat others or myself. I know that my character is ultimately more important than results on the court.

What sets me apart from others is the fact that “who I am” is more that just a student athlete, but ultimately who I am as a person. I care about making my community better.   This school year, I serve weekly in the junior high youth group at my church by leading a group of 12 --7th grade boys.  Last year, I prepared and went on a mission trip to Tijuana, Mexico with over 60 people from my church. We built 20 homes that week!  This life changing experience of giving back and doing something out of my comfort zone and making sacrifices, resulted in amazing relationships with the Mexican community and teammates, and grew me more than I could have imagined.  I am training now to go back again this summer.

At school, I'm involved in the National Honors Society, volunteering in the community, and was nominated as Bear Crew Leader for freshman orientation (to include monthly meetings to check on students).  I enjoy mentoring and making the year easier and more fun for those new to OHS.  I look forward to this process and finding the right school and team for my college years.

They included skills, point and match play, mental training, and fitness. Summer 2014, I attended 3 weeks of training as well. I also attended during winter break of 2014 for 2 days. The coaches, Brian Park and his assistant Lawrence also travel to junior tournaments and watch matches and evaluate players.
