Personal Statement

My name is Alex Margetts; I am currently a junior in high school. I am 18 years old, weigh 150 pounds, and my personal record for the 3200 is 9:49 , my personal record for the 1600 is 4:34 and lastly my personal record for a 5K during cross-country season was a 16:16.

I took on the challenge of running at the beginning of my Freshman year not knowing what the results were going to be; starting a completely new sport after eight years of baseball and football and turning it into a solid freshman season. I have accomplished a lot in the short time that I have been involved in track, including almost making cross-country varsity as a freshman, missing the cutoff by only one second. I feel as if track and just running in general are my own personal kinds of stress relief and allow me to "get away" from the rest of the world. I believe that this feeling is what keeps me running. I drive every day as hard as my body will let me, and whether on a long run during the week or a track workout on Tuesdays and Thursdays I always push myself to my limit.

I can offer a team a level of energy that my teammates have said is contagious, and I believe I have a positive effect on anyone and everyone around me. I strive to be a leader, am always on time to practice and am always helping my teammates whenever I can. I was elected freshman captain of my cross-country team, and I had the good fortune to be taken under the wing of the senior captain of the track team and have been called his "prodigy". Numerous people have told me that I have inspired them to be better themselves. I have also been asked to run for class president more than once and am considering pursuing this next year. During my junior year of cross country I was elected as a captain for both track and cross country.

My goals throughout my high school years on both the track and cross-country teams are to not only make varsity, but also to succeed past that point. This includes my high school goal which is to place in the top 10 at least once at states and at regionals. I am in it to win it and I will always put my team first and work hard to be a team leader. One day I would like to be a Varsity captain of a universities team and set an example that my teammates will strive to follow. I will always be around for my teammates not only in mentoring, but also as a good friend.

I have always wanted to play college sports and know a few people that have gotten into colleges and running. I plan to major in Pre-Medicine. My dream school is the University of Miami because I would like to take part in their medical program to become a doctor and at the same time compete in their collegiate level athletics. However, I am also always open to other quality schools! I will need financial aid and will potentially qualify for it because my mother is self-employed and both my brother and I will be attending college at the same time.

I believe that I will be an asset and a credit to the University that I attend.
