Being raised by a single mother taught me to become who I am today. Watching her diligence, strong ethics, and hard work to provide for me on a daily basis shows me the perfect example of how I need to approach my life. She is my inspiration on why I do what I do academically and athletically -- to give back to her some day.
My first high school track Coach thought triple jump would be a fit for me my sophomore year. From this point onward, triple jump has been a passion for me. As an older man, seeing his energy, smile, and passion for kids first and track second helped heighten my love for track. He passed away a month after my junior season ended. His impact on my life will always stay with me as he strengthened my development as a man and an athlete.
Watching my teammates drop the baton in the 4x100m during the preliminaries of the region championship my freshman year, as we were ranked second in the state and pulling my hamstring during the region championship in the midst of an exciting junior year have all been set backs that motivated me more and more throughout my track and field career to become better. These negative events have propelled me to strive for positive results.
