My Personal Statement
My name is Anthony J. Marini and I’m currently a junior at Ipswich High School in Ipswich, Massachusetts. I live with my parents, Vinny, who is Vice President of Manufacturing at CPI in Beverly, Massachusetts and Kathy, who works for the Town of Ipswich as Assistant Town Clerk. I have an older sister, Christine who is currently a senior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
In Middle School I ran track as an intramural sport. I have been part of the Ipswich Indoor/Outdoor Varsity Track team since I was a freshman. As a freshman I competed in the 600M, 4x400 relay and high jump (Indoor) and the 400MH, 4x400 relay and high jump (Outdoor). I was asked by my coach to run as part of the shuttle hurdles team at the MSTCA Spring Relays since one of the runners suffered an injury. Our hurdle team came in 5th place for Division IV. I earned my Outdoor Track Varsity letter and received the Boy’s Underclassman Track Coaches Award.
As I a sophomore I ran the 600M, 4x400 relay, high jump (Indoor) and 400MH, 4x400 relay and high jump (Outdoor). At the Red Auerbach Freshman/Sophomore Meet I earned a medal in all three events that I competed in: 600M (8th), high jump (6th) and 4x400 Relay (4th). I also competed at the State Relays on the high jump relay team and placed 3rd in Division E. I received the Boy’s Underclassman Track Most Points Award, earned my Varsity letter for indoor track and was named to the Salem News Boys Indoor/Outdoor Track All-Stars as an Honorable Mention for 600M and high jump (Indoor) and 400MH and high jump (Outdoor).
At the start of my junior year I was made a captain. I have helped new team members become more familiar with their events especially hurdles and high jump. My coach asked that I switch from running the 600M to the 55MH. It was a hard transition since I did not consider myself to be a sprinter but I soon felt comfortable running this event and my PR is 9.02. At our first meet our 4x400 relay team qualified for states and my high jump PR is currently 5’6”. I competed at the State Relays on the shuttle hurdle team and placed 6th in Division D. I received the Boy's Track Most Points Award, earned a Varsity letter and was named to the Salem News Boys Indoor Track All-Stars as an Honorable Mention for hurdles, high jump and relay. I’m looking forward to the outdoor season.
In school I take my classes seriously. I know that to get into a college one must show the drive and willingness to do well, both in the classroom and on the field. I’m looking for a small to medium college where I can study business/law enforcement/criminal justice. I plan to have a career in law enforcement but I’m also considering joining the military.
My extra-curriculum activities include being a member of People to People. My advisor/English teacher recommended me to attend a People to People Leadership Conference. This past summer I attended the conference which was held at Harvard University. It was a great time meeting everyone from all over the world. For a week we worked on our leadership skills, college readiness, and public speaking which I was chosen to give a speech to the whole delegation on my experience. My other activities include being part of the Ipswich High School Band where I play the trumpet and doing community service such as helping serve Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless.
Working on my family’s farm has given me a very strong work ethic. In the spring we sell bedding plants and get the fields ready for planting. We plant about 500 acres of tomatoes, carrots, squash but our main vegetable is sweet corn. We sell wholesale to local businesses in which I help in making the deliveries.
This summer however I won’t be working as much on the farm since I will be traveling to Australia to compete in the Down Under Track and Field Meet at Griffiths University in Brisbane. I can’t wait to meet other runners from all over the world! I will be competing in the 400MH and hope to be part of a 4x400 relay team.
As you can see I really enjoy track and field and want to continue on the college level where I know I would be an asset to any team. Using the values that my parents have taught me will help me be a better student and athlete.
