Personal Statement
While everyone was running in straight a line, I was running in circles whether it was lining up for recess or just waiting for the bus. This was the moment I realized I was different. Understanding ADHD was an accomplishment that sparked a period of growth for me. This understanding has inspired me to believe in myself and empowered me to explore my potential.
Some of the techniques that have helped me to channel ADHD are dancing and running. I love the movement in dance. I am a dance major at my Brooklyn High School of the Arts. I love the movement in dance. It helps me to stay focused. The movement helps me to be active and free my mind. When my mind is free, I feel like nothing can bother me. Another technique that has helped me is my love for track and field. I am a member of the Prospect Park Youth Running Club. When I step on the track, it is like my world is in front of me. The adrenalin that I feel when I run is like no other feeling in the world. One great accomplishment for me was winning the NYRR Youth 800 Meter race at the Melrose Games three consecutive years. Another great accomplishment for me was dancing halftime at the Brooklyn Nets game at the Barclays Center. Understanding ADHD has empowered me, I am fearless nothing can stop me from moving forward.
When I discovered why I am so active, I found a balance and learned how to work with it: I used this as a tool to help me grow academically and as an individual. My understanding has helped me to be able to help others with similar feelings and help them realize that having ADHD is nothing to feel ashamed about. One example of this is as an NYRR Running Youth Ambassador, I share my story with others and the joy of running and how it has helped me cope with ADHD. Another example of this is that I have been able to be effective in the classroom. In 2020, I was inducted into the National Honor Society in my school. I was able to accomplish this during the pandemic evidence of my self-discipline and resilience. My self-image and self-confidence have improved to the highest level.
Through my ability to turn an obstacle into an adventure, these endeavors and activities have provided me with the opportunity to develop my focus and drive. This is evidenced by my grades in school, the comments from my teachers and peers, and my coaches. I consider myself a leader, and I am no longer afraid to roll up my sleeves to get the job done, whether my attention is on running, dancing or academics. I have learned to work independently, and with less help from others in making decisions. I have essentially become more resilient and no longer feel discouraged by new challenges such as high priority school assignments or complex dance pieces. Throughout my journey, I have learned that every individual has a unique path towards personal growth. There is no quick fix or a single strategy; it must come from within the individual. For one to attain personal growth, they must rely on themselves and embrace setbacks in order to continue their path toward success.
