As a student at Bard High School Early College Manhattan (BHSEC) I am already a student athlete taking college level classes from college professors. I will graduate with an associate’s degree from Bard College, along with an already tried-and-true time management strategy. Last year, as a sophomore, I was the Manhattan borough champion in triple jump and I took third place in long jump in the PSAL Manhattan Borough Championship. I was also sophomore city champ in long jump and second place in triple jump in a separate competition for freshmen and sophomores in all five boroughs of New York City.
These achievements were pretty remarkable because BHSEC is known for its rigorous academics, but not so much for our sports teams. We have no indoor track team and our outdoor track team has been coached by a distance runner who is spread thin throughout all the events. Before last summer I had never had any real coaching in Track and Field - in fact, no one had ever actually taught me how to triple jump. Only last June (2017), after my successes in the PSAL competitions, did my parents start to take my interest in competing more seriously. Last summer I joined a private track club and qualified for and competed in the AAU Junior Olympics. I now train with a private jumping coach as well. Over the next year I hope to develop my talent and see how far it will take me.
My second-favorite sport is baseball. Since BHSEC didn't have a team when I got there, I started a baseball club with some friends that has since developed into a team. At the end-of-season banquet last Spring my coach gave me a special award for my leadership and enthusiastic support of my teammates. In addition to sports and my academic work, I play the piano (I'm working on Black Orpheus right now) and I am a frequent participant in social justice activism. My goal is to find a college with a strong sense of community where I will get an excellent education and also have the opportunity to compete in track at the highest level.
