Personal Statement

Hello,

I am Erich Armstrong Roepke and I am one of the most hard working, dedicated kids you will meet. I am 6'2" and I weigh 210 lbs. I learned my work ethic from my father at a young age. We did an assortment of outdoor activities and I was always pushing myself to the limit. When I was 15 years old my father and I were back-country skiing in the Wallowa Mountains when disaster struck. We were caught in a major avalanche that took my father's life. I was buried up to my neck and narrowly avoided fatality. It was at this defining moment in my life in which I realized life is short and I have to live every second to its fullest. I love sports and I wish to continue them into college. My mom is the sole provider for our family with substitute teaching and social security. It would be great to have financial aid but honestly it’s not everything. With my determination and drive I know no matter what obstacles; I will make it. This year I am working harder than ever before to improve. My latest accomplishment was breaking the school javelin record with a throw of 178'11". I threw the discus 137' and the shot put 41'.  When I was 13, I rode my bicycle 203 miles in one day, from Seattle to Portland. I devote the majority of my time to sports. I am in the gym or practicing seven days a week. I spend the majority of my money on camps for sports. I have attended five wrestling camps where I definitely learned work ethic and how to endure.  I work out at the gym four days a week after practice or before school. I usually spend a total of two hours in the gym; that means a lot of early mornings and late nights. I strive for perfection in every aspect of my life. I won 2nd place in the state stock market game and 1st in a national animated movie contest. I am an FFA officer and a member of FCCLA. I was in Chataqua so I am very comfortable with public speaking. I take a non-accredited high school course in entrepreneurship. I have started a local recycling company. My coaches agree I am one of the hardest working people they have ever coached. I was awarded the title "Mr. Dedicated" from my football coaches. During wrestling season, I wrestled at 215lbs the majority of the season. I weighed 195 then. At the district tournament my best friend decided to wrestle 215. He was a senior and that made three guys in the 215lb weigh class from our school. Only two can go to state. Being the best wrestler I made a decision to wrestle 285lbs. I took second at districts. I became very sick at the state tournament. I lost over five pounds. I weighed in at 189.6lbs. I made it to the semi-finals of state. A coach from the reining state champion's school saw I weighed 189.6 lbs and turned me in. I was disqualified. I was dead set on winning the state title and I have little doubt that it would have happened. I am from the small town of Enterprise, Oregon in the Wallowa Mountains. I attend the small Enterprise High School. EHS is 2A and in the blue mountain district. I was at the forefront of putting the Enterprise High School athletics back on the map through work ethic and determination. I have had teachers come to me and say I started the wave that is now contagious at EHS. In the end I wish to participate in college athletics to better myself and my community.

Thank you for your time,

Erich Armstrong Roepke
