Personal Statement

My name is Wilmon, but I go by Wil... which means you can call me Wil Smith. Unlike the actor, I may come across as quiet at first, but when the starting gun sounds, it’s my time to shine. My love for running actually started in football—although I didn’t enjoy the game itself, I loved the running drills and the thrill of seeing how fast I could go. That passion eventually led me to hurdles, following in my mom and grandpa's footsteps, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

In my junior year, I was able to improve my time in the 110M hurdles by more than one second, a personal achievement that showed me the power of consistent effort and focus. My coaches have always recognized me for my humility and team spirit. I’m not a super competitive, type-A athlete, but I take great pride in being a positive influence on my team. I enjoy mentoring younger hurdlers, helping them with their form, and encouraging them to push through tough workouts. For me, it’s all about being there for my teammates and celebrating everyone’s successes.

I’m also passionate about technology and will likely major in computer science, where I hope to continue developing my skills in problem-solving and innovation. As the oldest of three siblings, I’ve learned early on the importance of responsibility and setting a good example. I’m grateful for my close-knit family, and I’ve been fortunate to grow up in a home filled with love and support—my parents have been married for 20 years, and that stability has been a foundation for everything I do.

I’m excited about the future and the opportunity to continue growing as both an athlete and an individual. I’m eager to bring my dedication, teamwork, and passion for supporting others to the next level in college athletics.
