Personal Statement
I am currently a junior in high school and track has been an important aspect of my life for the past 2 years. I did not think I was going to fall in love with track and field and take it so seriously. After spending most of my life playing basketball, I thought that was the main focus for me. I only started running track in 9th grade because my brother was doing it but it became something much more. I began to build relationships with teammates and coaches and get exposure to the world of track and field which opened my mind to the possibility that I found my real calling. After this realization, I started to focus more on track and field than basketball and after some time stopped basketball to focus completely on track. If I get a chance to run in college, I will put in 200% not only on the track, but also in the classroom as my academic accomplishments so far reflects my commitment to excellence in this area as well. As a son of Caribbean parents, they’ve always impressed upon me that knowledge is one of the key pathways to success and this is why I take my studies seriously.
On a track team, I will bring coachability, grit, a strong work ethic and aspire to take on a leadership role. I believe that having physical gifts is important, but nothing can outdo having a strong character, mental toughness and good decision-making skills. While my strength is in the long jump (20.5 PR) and running sprints, I know that I'm capable of doing so much more. I am open to exploring other events to maximize my talent in support of my team. This year, I have started to high jump and run middle distance.
As for my academic goals, obtaining a college degree has always been at the forefront of my mind. I want to be able to go to a college/university that will nurture and challenge my intellectual curiosity and provide resources for me to succeed in college and in life. I have a passion for computers and am currently taking an advanced placement computer science class that I'm thriving in. I will be taking a dual enrollment cyber security course in my senior year. My goal is to obtain a Bachelor's of Science degree in Computer Science or Cyber Security. I also would like to purse a graduate degree in these fields. My hope is that my abilities in track and field will open doors for me to realize my dreams.
