I closed my eyes, crouched onto the track at the Episcopal indoor track ready to begin the show. Everyone else was racing for second, I've already won. The gun goes off and the men's indoor 55 begins. Each race is a performance, the audiences presence augmenting my speed. I need to get every motion down to race to the best of my ability. Arm position, stride length, and breath control. As I barrel down the straight away I feel no one behind me, I've won I thought. My victory was short lived as my coach proceeds to tell me that when the gun goes off twice, it means false start. My first race as a freshman on track and I false started. I love the dynamic of Track and I could not see myself in college without it. Coaches always say to be relaxed prior to the race but I can't see how that's possible when you've got to be ready to GO. On the outside I'm calm but in my mind I'm craving the exhilaration of the race, mapping it out in my head. Racing is a performance and like actors in a play you can tell which actors or runners enjoy what their doing. To me its not "uhhg coach signed me up for the 400" Its "I'm going to crush this 400".
