Personal Statement
My name is Robert Luera and I feel that I can be a good fit in a college volleyball program based on my personality for three reasons:
1. I acknowledge that I am nowhere near how good I can be. I play high school volleyball at a division 3 school known for our softball team. I also have only played one fall season and one spring season for club. For these reasons, I have much to learn despite being at the level of talent that I am at now.
2. I am very coachable. I know that when it comes to volleyball I am a little inexperienced and that the advice that the coaches can offer me is meant to make me better so I implement it whenever possible. I take to heart what my coaches tell me because I know that it can only make me better and that being coachable is a very desired trait in an up-and-coming player.
3. I am a very hard worker. I am a very competitive person by nature and I am not afraid to battle for a starting spot. This competitive drive pushes me to work my hardest. I believe firmly in the idea that, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."
Along with these personal attributes, on the court my athleticism is what sets me apart from many other setters. Blocking is one of my personal favorite parts of volleyball and I believe that it comes a lot easier to me than other setters. Not many other setters can dunk a basketball as consistently as myself (if at all). As a setter, I also enjoy playing defense. A large part of the defense I have to take part in is picking up tips on the outside attack, a task that I find easy to anticipate. Lastly, the middle on every team that I have set for has most likely led the team in kills simply because I believe that the middle attack is an option that is often underused, especially in transition and scramble plays.
The combination of me as a volleyball player and me as a person give me the tools I need to play and compete at the collegiate level.
