Personal Statement
My name Is Samer Kayed. I’m 16 years old and have been playing volleyball for two years. I started to play the sport after being told to try some beach volleyball. Before that day, I never thought I'd be where I am today. Straight after I played that one time, I started attending an academy to Improve my skills. Throughout playing for the first year, I was considered to be always more athletic and to be able to jump higher than everyone. But my mentality was always holding me down. As I played volleyball with the help of my coaches, they taught me how to be a leader and a team player better than anyone ever could. What I was compared to a couple of years ago is a complete 360º. The moment that gave me a real second perspective was in my sophomore year of high school when just as volleyball season was approaching I was injured. I ended up hurting my spine pretty badly. I was unable to play the sport for a total of 6 months. The injury gave me a good perspective of how fortunate I was to be healthy. People take their health for granted and never will understand how important their health is until something happens.Moving on academically, In my freshmen year of high school and sophomore years of high school, I did not take my academics seriously. I am planning on keeping my grade at a minimum to be a B+ average but I am aiming to get straight A's. I went from only training 3 times a week to training in the gym 6 days a week and practicing in and outside of school 10 days a week. I am very quick to grasp concepts whether they be conceptual or physical. I have improved drastically in a couple of years of training and have only really noticed by comparing videos and clips. I can't wait to see how much I will improve in the coming years. I am always trying to motivate my teammates; if they're having a bad day and seem to be slacking off in practice I continue to push myself and try to energize them during the practice in school. Whilst playing for my club team with some of the best U18 and U21 players in my area there was a big language barrier between the player and me. I still brought the energy that was necessary in practices and in games and found a way to bond with my teammates so that we can work our hardest and enjoy the game.
