Being the youngest of 8 boys, ALL athletes, playing every sport including track and field, really impacted me. It was expected of me to excel athletically as they did, but I didn’t share the same sport interests or feel I would measure up. Seeing one of my brothers play volleyball (only to improve his basketball skills), was literally a game changer for me. Captivated by volleyball, I was able to rise above the family pressures, and empower myself to make my own decision athletically, based on my interests and goals. I played volleyball for the first time my freshman year, and was chosen to serve as the team captain. My sophomore year I was selected to play varsity, and I also joined a club team (B18s), where we won regionals as a first year team. At this point I learned I was stronger mentally and physically than I gave myself credit for, and I realized I could accomplish what I set my mind to if I worked hard enough.
As a student-athlete, I hope to attend a college well suited for me academically, offering a competitive volleyball program where I can grow and prove to be an asset. Playing on the volleyball court, I feel a sense of determination unduplicatable in any other sport. Which enables me to motivate others, while naturally being a leader, maintaining a positive attitude under pressure, that tends to be contagious.
