Personal Statement
My name is Blair Abril. I am a Junior at Bakersfield Christian High School, I am 17 years old, and I would like to tell you why you should consider me for your water polo team.
I first started playing water polo when I was 8 years old, but I stopped after two or three years. Three and a half years ago in 8th grade, I started playing the sport again as a means of staying in shape. I have definitely progressed since then, and I am definitely interested in the possibility of pursuing the sport collegiately.
I am pretty realistic about my quality and ability as a water polo player. I have never been the best on my club team, or a First Team All-Area pick in my school career, but I have always had a lot of dedication and perseverance in my sport. I have been able to play with and learn from some great water polo players who have gone on to play collegiate water polo, and I received Honorable Mention for Water Polo for All-League this school year.
I have definitely progressed the most during last year. Before summer started, I set a goal for myself to lose weight, become faster, and be a more valuable player. During the summer, I went on the Paleo Diet; along with the healthy eating and hard exercise, I was able to lose more than 20 pounds. I became faster, as noted with comments of parents and my coach during the summer, and as noted officially with how I am performing on my Swim and Dive team at my school. With how I progressed through the summer and with how I performed during the school season this year, I can verifiably say with confidence that I have improved as a water polo player.
Along with the good quality of being able to play water polo, I excel academically. I have been able to maintain a high GPA throughout highschool, and I score exceedingly well on the SAT and PSAT. My highest official score is a 1370; I got this score on the first time that I ever took the SAT. I have not taken another official SAT test since then, but I achieved a score of 1410 on the latest practice SAT that I have taken. With regards to PSAT, I scored a 1340 on my PSAT/NMSQT. This score was high enough for me to be accepted into CollegeBoard's National Hispanic Recognition Program, which means that I scored within the top 2.5% of tests in my region of those with Hispanic descent.
I am also involved with many extracurricular activities. I am the President of the Rubik's Cube Club. I have been involved with the Kern County High School Honor Band since freshmen year. I have been on the Academic Decathalon team since sophomore year. I have been involved with all of the Fall Plays and Spring Musicals that have been put on since my freshmen year. I have been involved with Math Field Day this school year and my freshmen year.
Besides Water Polo and Swim, I technically play one other sport. Since my freshmen year, I have been on the Cheerleading team as our school's Mascot, Bobby Eagle. My sophomore year, Bobby Eagle was nominated for Best Mascot in what is called "Best of Kern"; this is where everyone in our county(Kern County) votes for the best such-and-such throughout the county. Bobby Eagle(or I) received a Favorite recognition, which is a step below the #1 Best. Bobby Eagle was also nominated this year as well, but the results have not been published yet.
Overall, I am a very good candidate in terms of my sport, as well as in terms of my academics. If you were to consider me to be on your water polo team, you could be sure that I would give it all that I have to be the best player that I could be for you.
