Personal Statement
My name is Julian Lim-Hanna and I am currently a junior attending Troy High School in Fullerton, California. I was first introduced to water polo in the summer preceding my seventh grade year in middle school, and have come to love the sport ever since. I began playing for a small club (at the time called "Lancers"), and when the program shut down I transitioned to playing for Admiral Water Polo Foundation, which I stuck with up to my sophomore year in high school. With AWPF, I competed in the national Junior Olympics three times, and participated in other tournaments such as the USCC, California Cup, etc. My sophomore high school season was my first year on the varsity team, coming first off the bench in our usual rotation. Unfortunately, I had a major setback that ruined the season for me- a few weeks in, I broke my toe, leaving me unable to play in half of our regular season as well as CIF playoffs. In the time I spent in recovery, my passion for the sport grew, and at this point decided I wanted to continue my water polo career through college. By the time I could play again I had a newfound desire to better myself as a player, and with this in mind I left Admiral and joined SOCAL WPF at the start of 2018. As a new player at the club, I was a little out of my element, however, I ended up doing pretty okay, and placed 3rd with my team at the US Club Championships and 1st in the Gold Division at JO's.
This past high school season, my team and I were not projected to do well, as we had lost quite a few seniors from the past season. As the most well-versed player on the team, I was able to step up and take the role as captain. Though the journey was rough, I managed to lead us to a league championship, defending our title in the Freeway League. I plan to compete in my fifth Junior Olympics this summer with SOCAL WPF, and develop my skillset for future seasons in high school as well as college.
Throughout the years, my different coaches have utilized me in various positions, making me a well-rounded, versatile player. Also, having two years of captain-ship prior to college has honed my ability to lead a group of individuals to achieve whatever goals we might set. In college, I hope to play preferably for a D1, D2, or D3 school that offers a rigorous academic program in the field of business and/or environmental engineering.
As always, thank you for reading my personal statement. Your interest in my athletic profile is greatly appreciated.
