Personal Statement
My name is Matthew Spry and I am a senior at Santana High School in Santee, CA. I have been playing sports all my life, and only discovered waterpolo upon entering high school. I have played baseball, soccer, basketball, and swim all in high school, earning a starting spot in each sport, but from the moment I stepped into the pool for waterpolo, I knew it was going to be my passion. Since starting waterpolo my freshman year, I have continued to play year-round, along with other sports, and I only continue to push myself and get better every day.
I have acted as captain on my team since I first started playing waterpolo. Both in practice and games, I always make an effort to congratulate my teammates when they succeed and support them when they fail. Throughout high school, I have maintained a high GPA (4.68), by taking multiple honors and AP classes, and I plan to pursue an engineering pathway going into college. In college, I hope to continue playing waterpolo and learning the intricacies that make this sport so incredible. While I lead my team in goals and was the second top assist maker last year, I pride myself on my defense, which is why my primary position is 2M defender and the position I hope to play in college as well.
Last year, I had to make an adjustment and take over the 2M position due to a teammate injury. Since then I have continued to play that position in both High School and the Junior Olympics, drawing numerous ejections and scoring constant goals for my teams. It has pushed me to learn the sport even better and understand my teammates better - by understanding this position I can better play my position which is usually point guard on offense.
