Personal Statement

My name is Giselle Martinez, I am a 15 year-old freshman attending Central Union High School in the small town of El Centro, Ca. I am part of my high school's Varsity softball team, and I enjoy every minute I'm out on the field.  Some of my goals for the following years are to obtain a high GPA during my high school years so that I'm able to obtain a scholarship. Another goal I have set for myself is to attend a good college or university that allows me to pursue my career in criminal justice. Lastly, one of my biggest dreams and goals ever since I was a little girl, has been to be able to play ball for a college/university.

I first started playing ball when I was 8 years old. First, I started out playing baseball for a league in my community and I liked it so much that I worked hard to earn my position as a short stop and pitcher. Soon after, I was introduced to softball and have loved it ever since. I've been playing softball for about 6 years now and I can undoubtedly say that it is my passion! Throughout my experience as an athlete I've learned to play many positions that have taught me that every position on the field is important. Right now, I am playing 3rd base, but I also have experience in playing 2nd, SS, RF, LF and center.

I believe some of my best qualities as a player are that I never stop growing, I am always on the go willing to try new things, new positions, new skills and I enjoy learning from my coaches as well as my teachers and classmates/teammates.  Another characteristic that defines me as a student and athlete is that I am a very goal oriented. I set myself small personal goals because I know there is always room for improvement, whether it's on the field, in school or in my personal life. Something that makes me different from other recruits in character is that I am self-motivated, very determined, and humble. I have demonstrated that I am capable of balancing school work, sports, and with chores at home.  I never tend to make myself or my peers feel less, nor seem like I am better than others because I think that everyone is special in a unique way.

In athletics something that makes me different and unique is having the ability to make the very best out of every possible situation; every loss, every win,  every single ball hit, every strike, or error  -I turn it into a learning experience because at the end of the day the important thing is to learn from your mistakes in order to become a better player on the field. I like to learn a lot, not only in school and sports, but also in life in general.

In academics, I believe my strongest subject is English, writing. As a kid, Spanish was my first language and I struggled my firsts years in learning the English language. Little by little with hard work and with the help of my teachers and parents I was able  to prove that I was fluent in English as well as Spanish.  Today, I am proud of speaking and writing in both languages fluently. Now that I'm older, I know the importance of dominating both languages. My goal during my high school years is to challenge myself academically. This year, for example, I enrolled in a Spanish 4 level class, so that next year I can begin taking AP classes as a Sophmore.  I know that if I work very hard in anything I set my mind to,  I will get far in life and meet my goals.
