Personal Statement
Hi, my name is Melody Van de Perre. I am extremely driven and passionate in the classroom and on the field. Freshman through sophomore year I struggled a lot with my personal life, I felt alone and unmotivated especially in the classroom. Softball gave me a light at the end of the tunnel everyday. I started in right field most games my freshman year and had some centerfield experience. Sophomore year our season was cancelled and we found out we were getting a new coach, Mike "Otto" Thill. Coach Otto set up summer open gyms and I didn't miss one, I was usually the only person there. He pushed me to be better than I was day after day. We put in over 120 practices from July to March and over 200 hours. In that time he switched me to be a left handed hitter and changed my position from outfield to catcher. Every time we had a practice he would get a text from me before he was out of the parking lot and I would be asking if we could practice the next day.
Softball gave me the motivation I needed to work harder for my grades. My GPA freshman and sophomore year was 3.2 and 3.3, but my junior year I had a 4.0 through the whole year. I've learned discipline and hard work through softball and I would do anything for the sport I love. I am not the player who has played on several club teams every year since I could walk, which I see are most of the players on this website, but I have, and will work harder than you could imagine to get better and strive to reach my goals, and yours, whether that means staying after practice or working everyday in the offseason. Thank you!
