Personal Statement
My name is Andrea McMahon and I am a 5'8 pitcher/utility player. I have played softball since I was ten years old and love all aspects of the game and being part of a team. I play softball as often as I c, taking pitching and hitting lessons year-round, playing on travel teams in the summer and fall, training in the winter and playing on Hackettstown High School’s Varsity softball team since ninth grade. I ended up pitching every pitch of 26 games last season. That taught me a lot about being tough, resilient and determined. I learned how to stay calm and persevere through difficult situations and to lead the team in being positive during tough games. While I love pitching, I am dedicated to all aspects of the game including hitting, fielding, base running and especially being a team player. This shows in the fact that I was honored with receiving the Coach’s Award my freshman and sophomore years. I was also given Honorable Mention All-Conference during my freshman softball season and First Team All-Conference during my sophomore season. I am most proud of my high school team winning the Conference Championship during my sophomore year.
In addition to softball, I played the midfield position in field hockey for 8 years. I played on a field hockey travel team for many years and was a Junior Varsity/Varsity swinger for the high school team for two years.
In the summer, when I’m not playing a sport, I am a volunteer counselor at a summer camp for special needs children. This job has taught me patience, compassion and acceptance of other’s differences. But it has also taught me how to manage and lead people which are skills that have made me a better team player.
While I love playing softball, academics are important to me also. I am looking for a college that will support me academically as well as on the field. Because I am outdoorsy and adventurous, I would like to attend a college that will prepare me in my pursuit of a career in Environmental Sciences. I am willing to travel further distances to attend college. Also, I would prefer to play for a school where my skills can be utilized early in my college career. My experiences in school, volunteering, and playing sports have all taught me to be hardworking and determined to do whatever is needed to achieve my goals. I am an athlete who is highly coachable, competitive, and a team player. I will no doubt add value to your school and team.
