My name is Penelope and I live in New York City, despite a lot of concrete, I have sought out turf and grass to continue being able to play and excel in the sport I love, softball! I have always been the athletic and nerdy girl at my school, and I love who I am. Hard-work and independence are paramount to my success on and off the field because I believe in myself. When I put hours in studying, working out, and practicing with my team, growth happens. I hope to continue my softball career throughout college so I can compete in the sport I love. My time as captain has taught me the importance of leadership and responsibility in a community. My coaches have demonstrated how essential role models and teachers are in my life through their effort and investment in both me as an individual and the team as a whole. Playing as a team has taught me teamwork but also what being a good teammate means-- picking your friends up when they are struggling and working as hard as possible for myself and my team. I plan to bring off the field all of these skills I have learned into a career of computer science. Playing softball has surrounded me with so many talented young women something of which you don't see in computer science. I want to be part of the change to close the gender gap and inspire other young women to step out of their comfort zone in this predominantly male field.
